Unlike Than Shwe, Kim Jong Il was a master of thought control

By BENEDICT ROGERS | 20 December 2011 | DVB

The death of Kim Jong Il rids the world of perhaps the most brutal, reclusive and eccentric dictator of recent times. It plunges North Korea into a period of uncertainty and instability, and threatens yet more tension on the Korean Peninsula. And it is a fittingly symbolic end to the year which saw tyrants tumble.

BURMESE PERSPECTIVE: The Regime War against Humanitarianism

By Kanbawza Win | 19 December 2011 | Monday

The international community was shock and aghast when the Burmese military regime turned down the humanitarian aid offered by the international community after the Nargis Cyclone hit the country in May 2008 killing some 200,000 people and making millions homeless. The United Nations practically had to beg to deliver assistance to hundreds of thousands flood-stricken people and according to the UN figures 80,000 people needlessly died from their regime’s arrogance This episode alone proves that the Burmese Generals and the army (Tatamadaw) have no good will (cetena) to its own people. So it came to no surprise when the Burmese regime block the humanitarian aid to the Kachin refugees running away from an all out war waged by the Tatamadaw against its own people just like what President Bashar al-Assad is doing in Syria..What cruelty and inhuman gesture can be more vivid than this and yet it is hoping for the West to lift sanctions and enter into the community of civilized nations?

Suu Kyi needs ethnic support to lead: KNU

By Kate Kelly | 14 December 2011 | DVB

Aung San Suu Kyi could realise her dream of leading Burma at the next elections, but only if she has the full support of the nation’s many ethnic groups behind her, says a high-ranking commander in the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA).

The Nobel laureate’s opposition party has been given the nod of approval to rejoin mainstream politics by President Thein Sein’s government, meaning Suu Kyi could run for a seat in parliament.

Sanctions on Burma must be Maintained

By Kanbawza Win | 14 December 2011

Sanctions and other punitive actions on Burma should  be maintained by the US and  Western nations for the simple reason that the current regime is not interested in political solutions and is mounting an all out  war against the Kachin ethnic nationalities, practicing ethnic cleansing and committing gross human rights violations on all other ethnic nationalities. It even continues to use chemical weapons to wipe out this particular ethnic race. One could not comprehend of why there is a cacophony of calls to drop the sanctions and let Burma into the community of civilized nations when it is still a rogue state.

Signs of hope in Burma, Suu Kyi tells Clinton

Bangkok Post | 2/12/2011

RANGOON - Aung San Suu Kyi voiced guarded hope Friday that democracy will come to Burma as the opposition leader warmly welcomed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to the home that was her prison for years.

In scenes unthinkable before Burma's recent reforms, Suu Kyi took Clinton by the arm and escorted her through the garden of her crumbling lakeside villa in the commercial hub Rangoon where she was locked up until a year ago.

China ‘exploiting developing world’: Clinton

By FRANCIS WADE | 30 November 2011 | DVB

Developing states are unlikely to benefit long-term from growing investment from the likes of China, whose need to supply for its energy-hungry population means its fiscal policies abroad are taking on an increasingly exploitative quality, Hillary Clinton has warned.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton headed to Burma Wednesday in the first top-level US visit for half a century, hoping to ignite a “movement for change” in one of the world’s most closed nations.

After attending an aid conference in South Korea, Clinton flew to a little-used airport in Naypyidaw, Burma’s remote showcase capital unveiled in 2005 by military rulers of the strategic but long-isolated country.

A BURMESE PERSPECTIVE: An Analysis of President Obama's Speech in the New Cold War

By Kanbawza Win | 26 November 2011

The rise of China in every respect in today’s geopolitical situation has created a new bipolar world compounded by the fact that in 2000 years China, for the first time has access to the Indian via Burma due to the Burmese Junta’s survival tactics, seems that Burma will be one of the hot spots in the new impending Cold War. Admittedly neither China nor US has any real desire for a ‘New Cold War’ to start, but deep suspicion and an unwillingness to break the mould of relations are leading to the emergence of these increasingly robust hedges and weakening of moderate forces on both sides. Until now, neither the US nor China has been fully prepared to face up to the underlying divisions because they imply some difficult choices. The corporate and economics still sees China as a major new commercial opportunity, while still far short of the power to represent any sort of a challenge to the world order.

The leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), meeting at the 19th Asean Summit in Bali, Indonesia, announced on Thursday that its members had unanimously agreed to give Burma the chairmanship of the regional bloc in 2014.

Burma had been scheduled to assume the chairmanship in 2016, but requested to take the chair early after being passed over in 2006 due to concerns over the repressive methods used by the country’s previous authoritarian regime.

If the ceasefire groups have friendly suggestions for armed groups that are either negotiating or yet to negotiate with Burma’s new government, the latter also has some counter-suggestions for the former too, according to a key member of the United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC), the alliance that has been calling for direct talks between it and Naypyitaw.

“My message is both for the groups that have reached ceasefire agreements with the Thein Sein Government and those who are still negotiating,” said Hkun Okker, Chairman of the PaO National Liberation Organization (PNLO), one of the 12 member organizations of the UNFC.

Why do the Burmese Regime Craves for Lifting of Sanctions?

By Kanbawza Win | November 8, 2011

The Burmese supremo Than Shwe and his bunch of generals have amassed immense wealth since 1988 but most of them being septuagenarian and octogenarian knew that their days on this earth are numbered. At the same time they realise that the rising tide of democracy cannot be stop, hence, the thought of how to transfer their ill gotten wealth to their near and dear ones become a great problem. They also knew that the Young Turks in the army, who are now much exposed to the outside world, could not guarantee them. Besides the precedents of what they had done to Ne Win is still fresh on them and it can be easily done by the young Generals to them?

MONEY MAKES MONEY DANCES: The Sino-Burma Relations

By Kanbawza Win | October 14, 2011

In May, Osama bin-Laden was shot dead that sent the relations between Pakistan and US into a tailspin and obviously Pakistan, still depending on billions of dollars in civilian and military aid from Washington began to look Beijing as an alternative for a strategic counter weight to India. This was confirmed when Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani met the Chinese Public Security Minister Meng Jianzhu and thank him for  $1.2 aid for law enforcement materials, when the US was accusing of the Pakistan intelligence ISI having links with the militants. But reading between the lines the Chinese response was lukewarm. A Chinese mining company, China Kingho Group pulled out of in the Southern Sindh province of Pakistan worth some $19 billion dollars plus, the biggest investment in Pakistan, citing security reasons, cannot not be comparable to the force withdrawal of Myitsone Dam of Burma in Kachin state worth a mere $3`6 billion. What is the catch?

Burma-Why Advocacy?

By Kanbawza Win | September 24, 2011

It came to no surprise and is well expected that ICG, (International Crisis Group) came up on the side of the Burmese military bullies against the entire people of Burma and the international community as it had always done, since the Burmese Junta assumes power in 1988. But I would humbly like to point out some of the fallacies.

No Will for Genuine Reforms or National Reconciliation

By Kanbawza Win | September 21, 2011

There is a Burmese saying, “A snake sees the legs of another snake.” meaning only the Burmese can see the craftiness and the cunningness of another Burmese, as they are the same birds of a feather, whereas a foreigner however expert he/she may be, have not gone through the experience of living in Burma and could not comprehend the pitfalls created by the Junta. Probably encouraged, by the visit to Burma by US special representative Derek Mitchell, the Obama administration announced that Assistant Secretary of State for Southeast Asia and Pacific Affairs, Kurt Campbell will be meeting with the visiting Burmese Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin in New York, on the sidelines of the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton complimented that the meeting of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the Junta President Thein Sein is a welcome development even though there is no fruition of any substance so far except some superficial gestures.

Why is the Burmese Army Rapist? : အဘယ္ေၾကာင့္ မုဒိမ္းတပ္မေတာ္ျဖစ္ရသနည္း။

By Kanbawza Win | September 9, 2011

Among the many races and different ethnic nationalities residing in Burma, Myanmar is the only ethnic race that harbours the African mentality. This phrase may be galling to the Myanmar, but as an academic, we have to call “a spade a spade.” for we cannot lie. Burma still maintains the title of the longest civil war in the world yet we have not heard of any ethnic resistance army or a resistance pro democracy group committing rape, Why? This is because the ethnic nationalities army and pro democratic groups are born out of the people, whereas the Burmese army or rather Myanmar Tatmadaw (ျမန္မာ့တပ္မေတာ္) in Burmese is raping the ethnic women with impunity because it was simply a pocket army of the Generals. Instead the Tatmadaw did not feel any remorse or regret but instead they are even proud to do that as it is their bounden duty to clean the country of the undesirable ethnic nationalities. This is the psyche and rationale of the Myanmar Tatmadaw that compels them to rape and pillage the country. Hence it is predictable that it will continue to do that in the future also because rape by a Burmese soldier is considered as a reward of his hard work.

Burma has been a pariah nation since 1988, shun by the civilized international community. The Burmese army is reviled domestically and around the world. This is galling to the men in uniforms and naturally these Generals want to sit smart in the community of the civilized nations, in spite of their gross human rights violations. The country had missed a chance to chair of ASEAN in 2006, because of strong international objections led by Western countries, when the systematic use of rape by the Burmese soldiers scrutinized and confirmed by International Organizations and Foreign Governments, couple with the attempted assassination of the Noble Peace Laureate at Depaeyin, which marked the most atrocious chapter of contemporary history of Burma, has become the most notorious country in the world.

Young ‘dragons’ seek to empower the Pa-O community

Monday | 27 June 2011 | Thea Forbes

Mae Sot (Mizzima) – Nang and Ingin don’t look like dragons. The 19-year-old Pa-O girls from Shan State in Burma appear rather shy. But they get fired up when encouraged to talk about how the education programme they are taking could empower their Pa-O community back home in the hills of Burma.

It’s a myth, of course. The girls grew up with the tale of dragons and their people’s origin through the union of a dragon lady and a 'weiza', a supernatural being. Even today, their sense of dragon origin and belonging to the Pa-O community—said to number between one and two million people spread over more than three Burmese states—is reinforced by the history they have learned during an innovative education programme on the Thai side of the Burmese border.

Burma’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has issued a personal appeal to all concerned parties to review the ongoing dam projects in Kachin State, the main one being the 6,000-megawatt Myitsone dam which is being built at the source of the Irrawaddy River.

SSA Accused of Killing Civilians

By SAI ZOM HSENG | Tuesday, August 9, 2011

A spate of recent murders, some allegedly committed by members of the Shan State Army (SSA), has increased fears among civilians living in the conflict zone where the former ceasefire army has been clashing with Burmese troops.

On Friday night, a 50-year-old man was found dead in his home in Kang Lone, a village in Lashio Township, hours after SSA troops entered the village. Neighbors said the man, Ba Tin, had had problems with the SSA the previous week for refusing to give money to support Shan soldiers.

A brief history of the Pa-O road to revolution

By Colonel Khun Okkar, PNLO Chairman, Friday, 22 July 2011

(Mizzima) – The Pa-O revolution was born along with the Karen National Union (KNU) revolution in 1949. Pa-O national leader Hla Pe was then the vice-chairman of the KNU.

After chairman Saw Ba Oo Gyi was killed in action, Hla Pe was given the chairman post but he turned it down. Then he resigned from the KNU and led the Pa-O revolution on December 11, 1949 with his Pa-O National Liberation Army (PNLA). He surrendered to then Brigadier General Aung Shwe (the current National League for Democracy chairman) in 1958 along with 1,200 troops under the slogan “arms for democracy,” and then he established a political party called the Union Pa-O National Organization (UPNO) and contested in the 1958, ’59 and ‘60 elections.

Australian confesses to Burma war crimes

ABC News | July 19, 2011

A Burmese refugee living in Australia says he committed 24 executions while working undercover for the Burmese military regime and says he was involved in at least another 100 murders.

Htoo Htoo Han, now an Australian citizen, says he performed the executions during the 1988 anti-government uprising that swept Burma, resulting in thousands of deaths.

Han says he worked as an undercover officer in Burmese military intelligence from 1987 until 1992, leading a group whose main role was to identify targets and kill them.
